The world famous towering Qutub Minar, was initiated in 1192 by Qutub- ud- din Aibak (1192- 98), who could manage to finish only the base. His successor, Iltutmush added three more stories, and later, Firoz Shah Tughlak constructed the fifth and the last storey. The first three stories are made of red sandstone. The fourth and fifth floors are made of marble and sandstone.

There is a slight difference of opinion as to its purpose: it probably was a tower of victory, but then again it could have been built to be a minar (tower), attached to the Quwwat- ul- Islam mosque, for the muezzin (priest) to climb up top and call to the faithful for prayer and some say it was the observatory of the great scientist Aryabhatta of ancient India.

Beautiful calligraphy adorns the adjacent edifices. The tower has five distinct stories, each marked by a projecting balcony.

Hours: 6am- 6pm

Admission: Rs. 10 for Indians, Rs. 250 for foreigners.
