A visit to Delhi would be incomplete without a trip to Chandini Chowk. It is a very colorful bazaar, very popular with traders and locals. It is considered as the best place to shop for fabrics, in wholesale prices.
Chandni Chowk was built in 1650 AD as an accompaniment to the Red Fort. It was designed by Jahanara, the Emperor's favorite daughter. A large chowk ("square") with a central pool was built at some distance from the fort. It has a fascinating market selling all kinds of goods.
During Shahjahan's time itself, an arcade of shops had been built in a half- moon shape. Even today it remains Asia's largest wholesale market. Crafts, once patronized by the Mughals continue to flourish in the small lanes of the city known as Shahjahanabad. Tradition and modernity meet here.
