Raksha Bandhan the festival for sisters and brothers is celebrated on the full moon in the month of Sravana in the lunar calendar.

It symbolizes deep love between brothers and sisters. Sisters tie colorful thread on their brother's hand and brothers in turn promise to protect their sisters and give them gifts.

It is celebrated with lot of zest and enthusiasm. In Indian tradition the frail thread of Rakhi is considered stronger than iron chains as it binds brothers and sisters in an inseparable bond of love and trust.

It is said that the Raksha Bandhan was a ritual followed by Lord Yama (the Lord of Death) and his sister Yamuna. Yamuna tied rakhi to Yama and bestowed immortality.

This festival has evolved over the years to encompass the importance of many people in Hindu society, yet foremost it continues to honor and uphold the relationship between a sister and brother.

Timing: August
