The Purans (religious books) contain many stories and legends describing the origin of this festival. According to one, during the samundra manthan, a pot of poison merged from the ocean which could destroy the universe.

To protect the world from its evil effects, Lord Shiva drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat. Because of it, he was given the name Neelkantha. On the eve of Maha Shivratri festival people worship lord "Shiva".

He is worshipped at temples with all night vigils and prayers. Bells ring, sacred texts are chanted and traditional offerings of leaves and milk are made to the Shiv lingam, the phallic symbol of the god. People keep day- long fasts so that Lord Shiva may grant them their wishes.

Thandai, a drink made with cannabis, almonds, and milk, is essentially drunk by the devout. This is so because cannabis is said to have been very dear to Shiva.

Timing: Between February- March
