Sahitya Akademi

Sahitya Akademi, India's national academy of letters is an organization committed to promoting Indian literature, in all its richness and diversity, throughout the world.

Set up by the Government of India, in 1954 to foster and coordinate literary activities in all the Indian languages and to promote through them the cultural unity of India.

The Sahitya Akademi in an effort to promote literary culture publish journals, monographs, individual creative works of every genre, anthologies, encyclopedias, dictionaries, bibliographies, who's who and histories of literature.

Every year the Sahitya Akademi awards prizes to the most outstanding books of literary merit published in any of the major Indian languages recognized by it.

The Akademi has so far organized more than six thousand literary programs of local, state, regional, national and international levels all over the country.
