Calcutta

The city of Calcutta has an inextricable relationship with the history of New Delhi (according to Indians) because they alternated roles as the capital of the Indian government at various points in Indian history. In ancient India, Delhi served as the capital of certain Indian empires (such as the Mughal Empire.) However, the British Raj designated Calcutta as the capital. New Delhi is located inside the existing metropolis of Delhi in northern India.

British Raj

The history of the British Raj is also concerned with the history of New Delhi (according to Indians) because from 1912 to 1947 the British Raj maintained New Delhi as their capital. The British Raj wasalso known alternately as the Indian Empire, British India, or simply India. The British Raj was under the jurisdiction of the British Empire from years 1858 up to 1947. The British Empire provided military protection over princely states in the jurisdiction of the British Raj in exchange for their local autonomy.
